Thorpe Hall Estate - A Quick Guided Tour
Thorpe Hall is a working Estate and proud to employ local people. Activities on the Estate include Farming, Forestry, Property to Let, Holiday Lets, Caravan Site, Fishing and a series of annual Events including our 'Family Fun Day' in August.
We're Looking Forward To Showing You Round
Thorpe Hall has been in the ownership of my family, the Macdonald's, for over 200 years. The estate lies in the beautiful valley of the Gypsy Race, also known as the Great Wold, close to the village of Rudston and 5 miles from Bridlington in East Yorkshire.
The Hall is a Grade II building which was built in the early 1700s and is still very much a working estate, and it forms an important part of the local community. The Estate is just a mile from the Historic Village of Rudston, where you will find the Rudston Monolith and Visitors Centre.
During your stay, why not try some real country pursuits, such as coarse fishing on one of the lakes or our popular guided nature, flora and fauna walks throughout the year.
And if you've got horses bring them along with you. You can have free livery and grazing, just bring the food and bedding!
There’s so much to see and do at Thorpe Hall and it’s all within easy reach from the Estate.

A truly unique family experience
Let us show you the estate with regular tours, or take off on your own by foot or bicycle. Alternatively, we have facilities for you to bring your horses for a truly unique stay.
Stephen Carvill - Artist in Residence
Thorpe Hall are delighted to welcome Stephen Carvill as it's Artist in Residence. Stephen will be using the grounds as his live workshop.
Stephen feels very honoured and privileged to be the first ever Artist in Residence at Thorpe Hall, a friendly and delightful home and a significant estate which has a unique and fascinating history.
This is the culmination of a long and happy association with the Macdonald family which came about through a mutual interest and appreciation of visual art and art education.
Thorpe Hall and Gardens are a truly inspirational and beautiful place with ancient and natural woodlands walks, streams and lakes and is a magical landscape of contrasts
Stephen feels that the work he produces in this environment will be a direct response to the site; some of the mythological ornaments are now absent, these splendid vistas may welcome new focal points and it should be an interesting challenge to replace what is needed while adding a contemporary twist to the subject matter. The aim is to produce an artistic response that will both complement the site and benefit from its rich and historical presence.
We are planning to open the grounds to the public selectively throughout the year to showcase Stephen's work, dates to be confirmed, please check facebook .
WALK FOR MILES
Miles of open countryside
There are some beautiful walks on the estate along with many bridleways to explore. Why not take your horse beach riding at Fraisthorpe. You can enjoy miles of open countryside.
Five-acre games field
Children love the estate, especially the flat, grassed Five Acre Games Field. Bring a bat and ball and a few friends for a game of cricket!
Explore the Wolds
If you enjoy Rambling there is a wide choice of walks within the area that will allow you to enjoy the beautiful countryside both in and around the estate.

Course fishing, childrens play area, Walking, Riding, Mountain Biking, cycling and that is just on the estate, there are many more Activities in the area to suit everyone from couples looking for a quite retreat to families needing to keep the children busy and happy.

Come and explore the Yorkshire Wolds
A relatively unexplored area of Yorkshire that offers some amazing history and places to see. The local village of Rudston is less than a mile away, where the All Saints Church contains the monolith & Heritage Centre from which the village gets its name (Rood Stane).
The nearest town is Bridlington just over 4 miles away, and from there you have access along the east coast from Whitby, Scarborough and Filey, right down to the resort of Hornsea. The area has lots of stately homes to visit, including Sewerby Hall, which is only a few minutes drive away, a fine example of an early Georgian residence and renowned for its gardens and a zoo.
Castle Howard and Burton Agnes Hall are also just a short drive away. Flamborough Head and RSPB Bempton Cliffs are 15 minutes by car, and boast fantastic opportunities to observe puffins, gannets, dolphins and seals in their natural habitat.
Along the coast at Scarborough, you have the Stephen Joseph Theatre which is known for its premieres of almost all of Alan Ayckbourn’s plays. It also boasts the largest open air theatre in Europe along with the home of Scarborough Cricket Club which home the World famous Cricket Festival and County First Class Yorkshire Cricket.
